US suggests NATO-like joint defence guarantees for Kyiv
(MENAFN) The United States has suggested security guarantees for Ukraine similar to NATO’s collective defense, but separate from the alliance’s formal Article 5 obligations, according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and a diplomatic source on Saturday.
The proposal was discussed during a call between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders, a day after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The diplomatic source described the plan as a “non-NATO Article 5 type guarantee,” reportedly coordinated with Putin, though details remain unclear. NATO’s Article 5 requires member states to defend one another if attacked, but the US proposal would provide a tailored security clause for Ukraine.
Meloni, who participated in the call, confirmed that the US had proposed a guarantee “inspired” by Article 5, allowing Ukraine to benefit from partner support, including the US, in case of future attacks. She emphasized that such guarantees need not automatically involve military action, noting that NATO’s Article 5 allows force but does not mandate it.
Ukraine has long sought NATO membership, a key factor cited by Russia in its ongoing war, though some Western leaders oppose Kyiv joining the alliance. Trump has repeatedly ruled out Ukrainian NATO membership.
The security guarantee idea was first raised in a conversation between Trump and Zelensky and then repeated in the joint call with European leaders. A second diplomatic source confirmed discussions of NATO-style protections but questioned how such a deal would be implemented, given Putin’s opposition to NATO and effective guarantees for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Zelensky is scheduled to visit Washington on Monday to discuss potential trilateral talks with Trump and Putin, the role of European allies in peace negotiations, territorial issues, and the proposed security guarantees.
