Russian lawmakers suggest benefits for long marriages
(MENAFN) Russian lawmakers are considering introducing federal payments to couples who have been married for at least three decades, RIA Novosti reported. While similar programs already exist in some regions, the initiative would expand the policy nationwide.
The proposal reflects Moscow’s broader family-oriented agenda, aimed at reinforcing traditional marriage and tackling the country’s declining birth rate.
Yaroslav Nilov, head of the State Duma’s Labor Committee, told the agency on Wednesday that the measure would demonstrate the state’s commitment to supporting long-lasting family ties.
“Many regions already provide such benefits, but we should establish this at the federal level, regardless of local budget capacities, to strengthen the institution of marriage,” Nilov said.
In February, a draft bill suggested awarding couples starting from 30,000 rubles ($320) at their 30th anniversary, with payments rising by 10,000 rubles ($105) per decade up to 70,000 rubles ($740) for 70 years of marriage. That version was rejected, but Nilov confirmed lawmakers intend to refine and reintroduce it.
He added that legislators will review updated data on regional programs and revisit the idea during 2026 budget discussions before submitting a revised draft to the government.
President Vladimir Putin has increasingly emphasized family and demographic policies, creating a special presidential council last year and endorsing a national family support service in June. He has also called for stronger backing of traditional family values as part of efforts to address Russia’s demographic challenges.
