Trump Renews Greenland Push
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump warned that the territory could be vulnerable to Russian or Chinese advances. “Greenland – basically their defense is two dog sleds,” he remarked, adding that “Russian destroyers and submarines and China destroyers and submarines” were active in surrounding waters. He insisted Washington would not allow such a scenario to unfold.
The idea of Greenland becoming US territory has circulated among American officials since the 19th century.
The island already hosts a US military installation, and Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring it during his second term, citing national security concerns.
In response, Copenhagen pledged to strengthen defenses by expanding dog sled patrols and purchasing two additional Arctic inspection vessels to support Greenland’s aging fleet of four.
Reports at the time indicated that 12 dog sled units were in operation.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is predominantly covered in ice, with most communities and infrastructure concentrated along its coastline.
Nordic governments have rejected Trump’s warnings about Russian and Chinese threats, emphasizing that no military activity has been observed in the region in recent years, according to a media outlet.
