Pentagon’s Record Spending Includes Millions on Luxury Foods

(MENAFN) The US Department of Defense recorded an unprecedented $93.4 billion in expenditures for September 2025 alone, with a portion of the funds allocated to upscale food items such as crabs, during a frantic end-of-fiscal-year spending surge aimed at preserving its enormous budget, according to a report released Tuesday.

While the bulk of the $93.4 billion was directed toward military grants and contracts, the nonpartisan oversight organization Open the Books highlighted that a notable fraction of taxpayer dollars went toward extravagant food purchases.

Leading the list of indulgent expenditures, the Pentagon spent $15.1 million on ribeye steaks, $6.9 million on lobster tails, and $2 million on Alaskan king crab, according to the September 2025 spending records.

Other luxury food items included $1 million on salmon, $139,224 for 272 doughnut orders, $124,000 for ice cream machines, and $26,000 for sushi preparation tables, all within the same month.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a speech to the military on Sept. 30, criticized excessive consumption, saying it is "completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon."

The watchdog group noted that these spending patterns are not unusual. Open the Books reported that this marks the fifth occasion under President Donald Trump in which the Pentagon has spent $2 million or more on Alaskan king crab in a single month—twice during his first term and three times in 2025.
