Fatal Shooting at San Diego Islamic Center Leaves Five Dead
(MENAFN) Five people, including two individuals identified as suspected attackers, were killed in a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities said the incident unfolded at the mosque complex in the Clairemont area, prompting an emergency response after reports of an active shooter. Police later stated that the situation had been “neutralized.”
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl confirmed that the fatalities included three adult men who were victims of the attack, along with a security guard who was working at the facility. He also said the two suspected shooters were found dead at the scene.
"What we know at this time is that there are three deceased adult males," the police chief said during a briefing, referring to the victims.
Officials added that all children present at the center—which also includes a school—were safely evacuated and were not harmed during the attack.
Investigators said they are treating the case as a potential hate crime due to the nature of the location, while emphasizing that the classification remains provisional as the inquiry continues with federal support.
"Because of the Islamic center location, we are considering this a hate crime until it's not, and at this point we're going to work closely with the FBI to make sure that we are matching all the resources that we need for this investigation," he added.
Police also noted that one of the suspects’ family members had previously contacted authorities earlier in the day, expressing concern that the individual had taken weapons and may have been in a suicidal state, which helped shape early understanding of the threat.
Separately, Donald Trump described the incident as a “terrible situation,” adding that he had received preliminary briefings and intended to review the matter further as investigations continue.
Authorities continue to examine motives, background details, and any possible ideological elements connected to the attack.
