USGS Reports Earthquake in Southern Japan

(MENAFN) A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the coast of southern Japan on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The tremor was recorded at 11:46 a.m. local time (02:46 GMT) and occurred at a depth of around 50 kilometers, or 31 miles, beneath the surface.

Japan’s Disaster Management Division within the prime minister’s office reported that the shaking was felt across parts of southern Japan. The strongest shaking reached a seismic intensity of lower 5 in Southern Amami, located in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage following the quake. No tsunami warning was issued in the aftermath, as officials assessed no significant risk of sea-level disturbance.
